One of the best way to introduce children to fly-fishing is through Tenkara fly-fishing. The simplicity of the system allows children to focus on the cast and the presentation of the fly. My kids are now avid fishermen. They understand the river - where the sweet spots for fish to feed and what is hatching at that time. With the sensitivity and the flex of the rod, they are able to understand how to play with the fish in order to land the prize in one of our Smallfish fly-fishing nets. Since we only do catch-and-release, they understand that a beautiful net is important to frame their picture of their prize. They have an appreciation of the art and beauty of fly-fishing and the importance of protecting our wild places.
